One of the most common issues that people come to therapy for is anxiety. This condition manifests itself in a variety of ways, but some of the most common symptoms include:
- Excessive worry about a variety of different things, and trouble controlling the worry
- Difficulty sleeping
- Panic attacks
- Feeling on edge or restless
- Irritability
- Difficulty concentrating
- Muscle tension
- Living in excessive fear
Some people experience anxiety across various domains of their lives, whereas other people might only experience it in the context of social situations or certain things that they are afraid of (phobias). Anxiety often causes people to avoid the things that they are afraid of, which only perpetuates the problem. This is where people often become very stuck. People’s lives can become very small because of their worries, fears, and avoidance. I can help you expand your capability to face all the various aspects of your life, and not live in such a constricted and confined way.
I use EMDR Therapy as one of my primary treatment modalities to treat anxiety, as I believe that it is often rooted in past trauma that has negatively impacted the nervous system. EMDR Therapy helps to get to the root of the anxiety — the trauma that likely caused the anxious state to begin with. I also incorporate a lot of mindfulness exercises and practices to help people cope with these symptoms, fostering the ability to stay present in the moment rather than worrying about the unknown future.
